South Sudan Independence

From January 9th to January 15th of 2011, there was a voting event during which 98.8% of people voted to make South Sudan an independent nation. Their independence day was declared to be on July 9th. Sudan had become independent earlier, in 1956, but after over 20 years of war, South Sudan became its own country. The fighting leading up to this claimed over 1.5 million people, and displaced more than four million.
