The Allies had been gunning for France for awhile and on this day, June 6 of 1944, the invasion began. Allied troops under the direction of General Eisenhower landed among the stiff German Resistance. The Germans were caught off guard and through the next 5 days of bloody fighting the Allies advanced across Northern France. By the end of August Paris had been Liberated, and by the end of September all of France and Belgium had been liberated as well. IN October Americans captured their first German town. Though after this the Allied efforts were set of a halt when a bad weather spell struck the lines and German defenses stopped much movement in the Winter, and forced them to surrender to the Germans in 1944.
