The archduke and his wife went to inspect Austro-Hungarian troops in Bosnia. The date of the inspection landed on a national day for Bosnia. To mark the occasion, The Black Hand ordered the assassination and a Serbian student named Gavrilo Princip blasted their car up on a corner of a street.
