1 sept 1956 año - Chinese Middle School Student Riots
Descripción:
Lim Yew Hock's government banned the Singapore Chinese Middle School Students' Union for supposed communist activities, and 5000 students took over schools to demand re-registration of the union, though stern warnings caused the protest to die down.
The government then ordered the expulsion of 142 Chinese-medium students on suspicion of anti-government activities, causing them to camp at schools in protest. Lim Yew Hock made a radio broadcast demanding students to leave the premises.
Students refused to back down and the demonstration turned violent and riots spread across the island and lasted 3 days. Troops from Malaya were called in. Union leaders were swiftly detained by the police. British were pleased by Lim's decisive handling, but made the LF government look pro-British in the public's eye.
Lim Chin Siong and Fong Swee Suan: Union leaders, students at the Chinese High School and were expelled after boycotting an exam. Lim was secetary of the SBWU and both joined the PAP but were arrested for anti-British activities and later expelled from the PAP for opposing the proposed merger with Malaya.
