Key Event: The War of 1812 is a Key Event because it demonstrates that America has finally found independence away from Britain; Britain can no longer enforce Americans to assist them economically and politically because America now has a stronger militia.

Defined: The War of 1812 began after the British had violated American shipping rights; The British were forcing American merchants to serve on British ships. During the war, the American army had attacked Canada but was unsuccessful. The British responded by burning down the White House after invading Washington, D.C. The most prevalent victory for the Americans was in the Battle of New Orleans, where Andrew Jackson lead the army for two weeks, despite the signing of the Treaty of Ghent two months prior.

Described: Britain and France were in conflict, wanting to cut off each other's access to supplies from the U.S. Thus, Britain passed the Orders in Council, requiring neutral countries to apply for a license from Britain before exporting goods to the French. Britain’s Royal Navy had also kidnapped American merchants on the sea, forcing them into labor. The U.S. Congress responded to Britain and France, explaining that they would only trade with the country which removed its trade restrictions. When Napoleon suggested he would stop the restrictions, James Madison refused to further trade with Britain, influencing the start of the War of 1812.

Short Term: The Treaty of Ghent was created to end the War of 1812. In the treaty, it entailed that all conquered territory should be returned and a definite border between the United States and Canada would be decided. The war also caused the Federalist Party to lose its political influence over the nation, because they were considered unpatriotic for their lack of support for the war.

Long Term: The war caused immense nationalism and created pride amongst Americans, encouraging the growing spirit of American expansionism. Due to the British losing the war, their influence over the northwestern Native Americans began to vanish.
