The Byzantine Empire was the eastern half of the Roman Empire, based at Constantinople that continued 1000 years after the western half of the empire collapsed.

---It should not be thought of as a different empire from the Roman, however, it helps to understand the evolution of the Roman Empire trough the Middle Ages---


The name "Byzantine" was coined by 16th century CE historians to differentiate the medieval Roman Empire.
It was the longest-lasting medieval power.
