Women spearheaded the progressivism that dominated the last decade of the 19th century. Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr opened Hull House and became leaders of reform for immigrants in cities. Journalist Ida Tarbell worked to exposes the corruption of large trusts such as Standard Oil, and African American journalist Ida B. Wells worked to expose lynching and mistreatment of African Americans in the South.
