The National Convention became divided after Louis XVI's execution. During the divide, the Jacobins took control of the convention and initiated the Reign of Terror. The Jacobins abolished christianity and created a new calendar. The Jacobins also rapidly arrested, tried and executed anyone who was suspected to be an enemy of the revolution. The number of deaths reached about 40,000. The Reign of Terror ended with the execution of Robespierre who was one of the main leaders of the revolution and the mastermind of the Reign of Terror.
