The Mexican revolution started in 1910 and lasted for the rest of the decade. During the civil war, Mexicans who did not want to fight were forced to leave the country, and some 890,000 Mexicans emigrated to the US during that time. The revolution started when liberals challenged the ruling dictator, Porfirio Díaz, who had been in power for 34 years, much longer than allowed in the Mexican Constitution. Francisco Madero, an exiled political activist, called for the restoration of the constitution and became president in 1911 after Diaz's resignation. However, Madero was assassinated in 1913 by counterrevolutionaries led by Diaz's nephew. The US sent aid to Mexico in 1914 to help the revolutionaries.

Venustiano Carranza, a revolutionary, gathered followers and drafted a new constitution that was adopted by the congress in 1917. Carranza, as president, ignored the premises and was assassinated and General Álvaro Obregón rose to power, ending the revolution in 1920.
