Louis Philippe accepted the constitutional charter, but did not answer popular demands for institutional change. An agrarian crisis in 1846 only deepened feelings of resentment towards the government, sparking a rebellion in 1848, resulting in Louis’s abdication. However, the broader differences within the liberal faction—those who advocated for limited reforms and those who advocated for more radical socialist based reforms. The resulting chaos would result in the rise of Louis Napoleon to win the election in December, 1848.
