Following the start of the Protestant Reformation, Pope Paul III founded the Council of Trent in hopes of finding a way to reform the Roman Catholic Church and prevent Catholics from converting. The Council clarified the meanings of doctrines published by the church and helped fix the things that made Martin Luther leave the Roman Catholic Church, such as paying for indulgences and the sacraments. Clarifying these things helped them maintain a steady membership. (4.2)
