The British Empire fell after 1901 and a new balance in the world arosed. Brittain was not in the driver's seat anymore.

This era is characterized by the industrial revolution, social changes, and science advancements. New ideas in philosophy, psychology and political therory igneted new ways of expression.

Modernism is a mix of literary styles which also contains a lot of different writing techniques. Modernism was a radical break with the past and the present searching for new ways of expression. Some modern classics are written during this period, The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men, and The Old Man and The Sea are famous writings.

Famous authors from this era is John Steinbeck, Tony Morrison, Nadine Gordimerer, William Golding, Janet Frame, Patrick White,

Nadine Gordimerer was a South African writer. In 1991 she recived the Nobel Prize in literature. She is recognized as a woman that her "epic writing has been of very great benefit to humanity"

Post-modernism was a movement that followed modernism. It broke writing rules and experimented with text. That led to a lot of new styles such as hip-hop and fantacy for example.

Hip- hop is today the bestselling music cathergory. The hip-hopers influnce the society with their lyrics abd their music is influnced by society as well. Some people call say that the music genre is a kind of poetry, it often includes rhymes and other litterary tricks to make the texts greater. The text often contains critizism towards society and politics or parts about riots, The American Civil Rights Movement, shootings and law establichment.
