The Enlightenment was an intellectual and cultural movement that introduced a new worldview. Philosophers applied the methods of the Scientific Revolution, such as logic and reason, to create progress in society. They circulated their ideas through means such as print, coffeehouses, and salons. New ideas, such as individual rights and liberties, religious tolerance, separation of church and state, etc. undermined the authority of absolute monarchs. These new ideas paved the way for the revolutions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
