Rise in Gothic Architecture (17 Nov 1100 Jahr – 17 Nov 1400 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
s often associated with cathedrals and other churches in Europe; this style began in France and included the pointed arch, the use of large, stained-glass windows, and flying buttresses to support higher ceilings and slender columns.
The Abbey Church of St. Denis in Paris represents the earliest Gothic church and was built in the 1140s. Gothic cathedrals, which were meant as a microcosm representing the world, were well illuminated and often included rose or wheel windows and sculptures such as gargoyles. These cathedrals reflected the greatness of God in comparison to the smallness and insignificance of man. Notre Dame de Paris and Chartres Cathedral (both in France) are well known Gothic cathedrals.
