Ibn Battuta was a prominent Muslim traveller and Sharia law interpreter. His travels brought him to India, the Maldives, the Swahili coast of Africa, and the Mali Empire. He served as qadi in both the Sultanate of Delhi and the Maldives. He was extremely harsh in his interpretations of Sharia law and left no crime, no matter how long ago it happened go unpunished. In Africa, Ibn was horrified by the lack of following of Sharia law, specifically relating to the clothing of women, and unsuccessfully tried to persuade those in Africa to follow Sharia law. (3.1)
