The Kingdom Of Ghana was the center of the gold trade in West Africa. It became immensely wealthy due to the taxation of those trading within its borders. Using this wealth, it funded a large army that protected the kingdom. By the 10th century, the Kingdom of Ghana converted to Islam to improve relations with Islamic traders. Those living in the Kingdom Of Ghana were not forced to convert to Islam and many either continued to practice their own religion or practiced a combination of Islam and their own religion. The Kingdom Of Ghana fell due to nomadic invasions and eventually became part of the Mali Empire. (3.1)(3.2)(3.3)
