Meiji Restoration (Japanese Industrialization) (1 Jan 1868 Jahr – 31 Dez 1878 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

Before the Meiji Revolution Japan the power was in the hands of the Tokugawa family who created a military government or bakufu. However, the power was mainly in the hands of the local lords called daimyo. The Tokugawa was infamous for its harsh policy toward foreigner. This policy was that anyone who were to set foot on Japan soil would be put to death. Since Japan didn't have any foreign relationships, there was no need for a navy. What sparked the Meiji Revolution was the arrival of an American naval commodore Matthew Perry in 1853. Perry brought high-tech ships to show off to Japan and determination to open Japan's markets because the U.S. needed more trade partners. The impressive America steam-powered ships brought by Perry were enough to convince the bafuku to sign embarrassing treaties. During the Meiji Revolution, Japan decided it was now necesary to mordernize its military and form a navy.
