The Meiji Restoration, other knows as the Japanese Industrialization, began in Japan in 1868 and lasted for 10 years. Japan kept themselves closed off from all other places for a very long time. When Matthew Perry showed up in their harbor with big ships and a Navy, Japan had no choice but to agree to open up to trade with them and others since they had no army set up for themselves. Once they opened up their trade, they were introduced to many new ideas in governing and many other places. This sparked Japan to industrialize.
