Shostakovich was a russian composer under the USSR, so he had to deal with intense censorship. His fifth symphony brought him temporarily back into the government's favor. It can be interperated as a dirge for the lost russia or a spiritual battle ending in vicroty. These dual meansins were needed for subversive wrt to make it through censorship.
