Beschreibung:
-discovered in 1880-it is considered a reemerging infectious, and vector borne disease
-Roman Fever (200 BC): "vapors emanating from the marshes"
-miasma=bad air
-Anopheles Mosquito, pregnant females feed at night
-Cerebral Malaria which can lead to comas and seizures.
-Pregnancy Malaria: can be found with pregnant women
-eradicated from US, but not other countries
-300-500 million cases worldwide, but children under 5 are more prone. It kills most African children.
-There are three treatments: quinine, artemisinin, and chloroquine
-currently in Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia
-Symptoms: fever, sweats, chill, body and muscle ache/pain
-some preventions: Mosquito sprays, mosquito nets
-Mosquito resistance from DDT chloroquine as early as 1957
-symptoms are located in the abdominal area and muscles that lead to chills, fatigue, fever, nasusea, or vomiting
