Norman invasion and French influence
Norman invasion in 1066; a Frenchman, “William the Conqueror”, became the King of England.
About 10,000 French words were incorporated in the English languages.

Social, and cultural changes and changes in language and literature. French was inserted as the language of the royal court and in the law. French became the language of the nobles and kings, for more than 300 years and was praised and looked upon to be a language of high intellect. New genres and ranges of literature emerged of the French influence such as Chivalry romance, religious songs- folk ballads, drama, and musical plays.

The Canterbury Tales is a collection of 24 stories which give a realistic picture of medieval society often with a touch of satire and humour. But also run over 17.000 lines written in Middle English. The author of these stories was Geoffrey Chaucer from England. Chaucer was a well educated noble with major jobs such as Controller of Customs and Justice of Peace. It was during these years that Chaucer perfected the work of the Canterbury Tales and is significant work as it is considered a determining factor for English to develop into a national language… Middle English.

Canterbury Tales, part 1: Wife of Bath
Among the best-known of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. In this story, he particularly portraits the lives of women at the middle age. This was something new for people due to women's minor effect in the society at these times. It's called "Wife of Bath", which provides insights into the role of women in the 14th century.
