The middle ages – people use the phrase “middle ages” to describe Europe between the fall of Rome and the beginning of the renaissance in the 14th century.
The old English period ( 428 – 1066) – sound like german and Russian
Before old English was introduced, England was under the rule of Roman Empire Latin was the language of power and various Celtic languages were spoken among common people.

Beowulf
The oldest epic written in Old English dated between 8th – 11th century
In more than 3.000 lines, it tells the fictitious story of the hero Beowulf from Sweden who fights monsters and dragons
Beowulf is the oldest surviving long epic poem in Old English, and it´s commonly cited as one of the most important works of Old English literature. It was written in England, sometime between the 8th and the early 11th century. The author was an anonymous Anglo- Saxon poet, referred to b scholars as the “ Beowulf poet”.
The poem is set in Scandinavia and it´s a hero of the Geats, who comes to the aid of the king of the Danes, who mead hall in the Heorot has been under attack by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel´s mother attacks the hall and is then also defeated. Beowulf becomes after the king of Geats. After a period of fifty years has passed, Beowulf defeats a dragon, but is fatally wounded in the battle. After his death, his attendants bury him in a tumulus, a burial mound, in Geatland.
The full poem survives in the manuscript known as the Nowell Codex, located in the British Library. It has no title in the original manuscript, but has become known by the name of the story’s protagonist. In 1731, the manuscript was badly damaged by a fire that swept through Ashburnham House in London that had a collection of medieval manuscripts assembled by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton.
