The Battle of Iwo Jima was fought between the Japanese army and the United States Marine Corps which took place near the end of WW2. It was the first major battle of World War II to take place on the Japanese homeland. The island of Iwo Jima was a strategic location because the US needed a place for fighter planes and bombers to land and take off when attacking Japan. The American generals who planned the attack thought that it would take around a week to take the island; however, the Japanese had many surprises for the US Soldiers, resulting in a furious fight which took over a month. After 36 days of brutal fighting, the US had finally secured the island of Iwo Jima. They placed a flag on top of Mount Suribachi. The battle dneded with the United States winning.
