The massacre occurred in the heart of France when Catholics (Guise and Valois) began to murder French Huguenots. This plan was devised by the Guise family (aka the "Ultra-Catholics) who then persuaded the Valois (family on throne), primarily Catherine de Medici, to assist in the attacks.
