For over a century now, the U.S. has used a two-ish party system, with Democrats and Republicans sharing most of the power. There are "third parties," such as the Green Party or the Libertarian Party, but they are much smaller. Over this time period, the circumstances and ideologies of both parties have undergone a lot of change. Over time, the representatives of the democratic party slowly got more and more liberal while those of the republican party go more and more conservative. There's another theory (more business/economy based) that the basic priorities for both parties are still the same, but that what's needed for the priorities has changed. To a degree, the Republican party has always been more business oriented, but in the past, businesses needed nation-wide currency, tariffs, infrastructure, and a generally "big"government, but as time went on, it became better for businesses if there was a smaller, less involved government.
