The Shakers get their design characteristics from 18th century Georgian, Federal and 19th century Greek Revival styles. The had later influences from the Victorian era and also they share similar ideas as the Mount Lebanon the parent group. The shakers have a belief that community should be before individuals and experiences should be shared between work, community and life.
The Shakers used a lot of different machines and were where inspired principle by the past and nature but they also reinterpreted and simplify forms.
Buildings have design elements that showed symmetry, little or no ornament and efficient planning that supports Shaker work and workship and reinforces expected behaviors within the community such as separate entrances for male and female believers.
Lightness, respect for materials and functionality describe Shaker furniture. Furniture is typically relied on local materials, form and function for beauty which make unique pieces.
