The Kievan Empire united the Slavic people of Eastern Europe into one kingdom. In 980, Vladimir I became the grand price of Kievan Russia, and soon after Orthodox Christianity was adopted. The empire halted the eastward expansion of Latin Christianity, further dividing the two sects.
