Though the Mayan Empire originated in n1800 BCE, the classic Mayans (characterized by a divine ruler) only emerged in 250 CE and lasted until 900 CE. It encompassed all of Mexico and surrounding Central American countries. Noted for its elaborate temples and use of hieroglyphics, it was one of the longest and greatest significant civilizations in history and served as a foundation for later empires in the region.
