The Mexica people united into the Aztec empire after the fall of the Toltecs. While the Mexica first served as serfs and mercenaries, later they conquered territory and made alliances to create a unified empire that featured economic and political independence and security; a monarchy was established soon after. War was imbued with diving meaning, and labor and land were distributed among the warrior class. The Aztecs had a thriving economy that functioned through bartering, and religion was a prominent part of daily life. The empire fell after it was destroyed by the Spaniards.
