Mayan Civilization (1 Jan 300 Jahr v. Chr. – 1 Jan 1001 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

The Mayan civilization was one of the most advanced pre-Columbian societies of South America. It was organized into city-kingdoms that would constantly fight with each other. In battle, it was common for warriors to be taken captive and tortured or sacrificially killed, however in the kingdom of Chichen Itza, captives were allowed to integrate into Chichen Itza society instead of being tortured or killed. By 800 AD, most Mayan kingdoms disbanded, however, the kingdom of Chichen Itza of the northern Yucatan lasted until 11th century AD. Mayan society consisted of a ruling class, a class of priests, a landowning nobility, hybrid merchant-ambassadors, a class of sculptors and architects, a class of artisans, and classes of peasants and slaves who provided food and physical labor for the rest of society. Furthermore, the Mayan society had a complex calendar that was thought to be able to determine the events of any day based around a 52-year cycle. It also had a complex system of writing with both ideographic and syllabic elements. Surviving texts written in this language give basic insights into the Mayan religion. (2.1)(2.2)(2.3)
