Cabeza de Vaca was part of an expedition in 1528. Long story short, It did not end well he ended up meeting Native Americans. They gave them food, water, clothes, and turned them into slaves as any good people would do. When he earned his freedom he went south 'til he found New Spain. There he told the tale of cities of gold.
