Robert II the Pious (26 Okt 996 Jahr – 20 Jul 1031 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
son of Hugh Capet and Adelaide of Aquitaine. Robert distinguished himself with an extraordinarily long reign for the time. His 35-year long reign was marked by his attempts to expand the royal domain by any means, especially by his long struggle to gain the Duchy of Burgundy. His policies earned him many enemies, including three of his sons. He was also known for his difficult marriages: he married three times, annulling two of these and attempting to annul the third, only prevented by the Pope's refusal to accept a third annulment. Hugh Capet had ensured his family's succession to the throne by having Robert II crowned and accepted as King during his own lifetime; Robert II, when his son was old enough, determined to do the same. His oldest son Hugh Magnus was thus crowned King of France in 1017, and thenceforth ruled beside his father. However, when older, he rebelled against Robert. Hugh died at age 18 in 1025 while preparing a rebellion against his father. Robert's second son succeeded him as Henri I.
