1854-1881 : Victorian Era 1 (20 Jun 1854 Jahr – 22 Jan 1881 Jahr)

This era not only witnessed liberalization in the field of education but also touched all the aspect of society like political, economic, religious, cultural and social. In the political aspect, this period witnessed the first reaction of Indian minds in the form of a mass revolt in 1857 with the first war of Independence. The annexation of Oudh and others areas by Lord Dalhousie according to Doctrine of Lapse, The Queen Victoria’s Proclamation etc. not only affected the political scenario of the country but also made a great social impact in every field. There were Renaissance and social reform movements in the Indian walks of Life. This actually widened the minds of the people with western liberal thought and principles and taken away the evil practices of the society and especially that existed in Hindu Religion.

With these reform movements and the involvement of some British Official, Organization of Education Department took place during this period with establishment of Universities, increasing number of schools etc. There was provisions for female education and the minorities. Many educational revenues and Grant-in-Aid system was also established to improve the quality of Education. There also existed controversies and issues related to Missionary education, freedom of religion, appointment to government offices, adopting sons and successors etc.

The main documents of this period includes the Woods Despatch of 1854, which recommends university in every provinces, acceptance of vernacular, Anglo-vernacular and English languages; insisted on female education; provisions for vocational education and training of Teachers; Establishment of Grant-in-Aid system, etc. Thus it touched all the aspects and thus known as the Magna Carta in Indian Education System.

Then the Despatch of Lord Ellen Bordugh and Lord Stanley which also added major improvements in all levels of education. Later in 1883 The Education Commission or The Hunters Commission had made a significant historical changes in the Indian Education System. The involvement of Press and news media with the License Act, Vernacular Press Act and Press Act of 1835, created a kind of awareness among the people, it raised the spirit of Nationalism and improvement in accepting facts and knowledge both in Vernacular and in English. Thus the Victorian Era-I (1854-1881) was the period of Educational Liberalization, Western thoughts and knowledge, Progress in women education and as a whole the period of many transformations, reform movements and rise of Nationalism.
