Great Schism (1 Jan 1378 Jahr – 1 Jan 1417 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

The Great Schism started because Urban VI wanted to crack down on corruption, and the cardinals elected Clement VII in opposition to these ideas. The Holy Roman Empire, England and Italy backed pope Urban VI while France and Scotland favored Clement VII. The lack of faith in the institutional power of the church led to people practicing religion on a personal and community level in confraternities. These confraternities held prayers and raised money for the community church. In 1409, the Council of Pisa elected a third pope, but the Council of Constance held from 1414-1418 was greatly successful. The election of Martin V ended the schism in 1417.
