- Caused in part by drought in 1931, partly by the upheaval from collectivisation
- Holodomor - the famine in the Ukraine - killed millions and is often considered a genocide
- Robert Service (American historian) believes the famine was engineered by Stalin (other historians not so much, though he didn't take effective steps to counteract the famine)
