Not long after the First War, conflict broke out when Bulgaria, dissatisfied with its share of the spoils of the First Balkan War, attacked its former allies. Serbian and Greek armies repulsed the Bulgarian offensive and counter-attacked.

With Bulgaria also having previously engaged in territorial disputes with Romania, this war provoked Romanian intervention against Bulgaria. The Ottoman Empire also took advantage of the situation to regain some lost territories from the previous war.

As troops from the coalition entered Sofia, Bulgaria surrendered, signing separate peaces with the Ottomans and their neighbors. The Ottomans were granted Edirne, Kırklareli and Didymoteicho. The Treaty of Bucharest made changes to Bulgaria's borders with the following nations;

1. The eastern frontier of Serbia was drawn following the watershed between the Vardar and the Struma rivers, except for the valley of Strumica.

2. The boundary line separating Greece from Bulgaria was drawn from the crest of Belasica to the mouth of the Mesta river.

3. Bulgaria ceded Southern Dobruja to Romania.
