In August 1863, two Spaniards are killed in Peru, in return a Spanish fleet is sent from a diplomatic meeting in San Francisco to Peru. The admiral demands an apology and reparations to the affected Spanish nationals. Peru refused, claiming it was an internal matter, in response, Spain also demanded repayment of Peruvian debts left over from the War of Independence.

In April 1864, in retaliation for Peru's refusal to meet their demands, Spain occupied the Guano rich Chincha Islands. Tensions rapidly rose until in December, Chile declared war on Spain, fearing recolonization of South America as had occurred in Brazil. Having support from another major South American power, Peru joined in and declared war as well.

The War consisted of a series of Naval battles between the superior Spanish Ironclads, against Peruvian frigates and Chilean schooners. Spain won a decisive victory in the Battle of Abtao, sinking much of the Peru-Chilean vessels. Later bombarding the cities of Valparaiso and Lima.
After these crushing blows, Peru and Chile made peace with the Treaty of Piratini.
