Bleeding Kansas (21 Nov 1855 Jahr – 19 Mai 1858 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

Also known as the Mini Civil War, Bleeding Kansas was a violent civil conflict in the United States which started as a result of a debate over the legality of slavery in the Kansas Territory. The conflict was characterized by years of electoral fraud, raids, assaults, and retributive murders between anti-slavery and pro-slavery citizens.

At the heart of the conflict was the question of whether the Kansas Territory would enter the Union as a slave state or a free state. The Kansas–Nebraska Act implemented popular sovereignty, making the decision to be made by the settlers through a popular vote.

Tensions quickly rose until November 1855, when an abolitionist was shot by a pro-slavery settler. while the majority of settlers in Kansas were anti-slavery, the nearby Slave State of Missouri, was populated by a large number of pro-slavery settlers, many of whom tried to violently influence the decision in Kansas.

The conflict was fought primarily between civilians, where it eventually degenerated into brutal gang violence and paramilitary guerrilla warfare. The conflict largely ended with The Marais des Cygnes massacre in May 1858, after which no fighting would occur until the War between the States, three years later.
