Also known as the First Sino-Japanese.

Negotiations between France and China broke down in mid-August, and on 22 August France to attacked the Chinese fleet at Fuzhou. The ensuing battle proved to be a crushing Chinese defeat. Later in September, the French were able to negotiate an alliance with Japan, who entered the war on their side. In exchange, France would guarantee Korean independence and end its protectorate with Ezo.

The French put pressure on China by landing an expeditionary corps in northern Formosa to seize Keelung and Tamsui. Initially, low numbers halted the French from advancing into Formosa, though the arrival of Japanese reinforcements in November allowed the two to occupy the Island by January.

After a series of victorious French and Japanese campaigns in Tonkin, the Chinese Islands, and a coup in Korea, along with the threat of Russia joining the war, China made peace in 1885.

The Treaty of Tientsin saw China make multiple concessions to France and Japan;

1. The French protectorate over Annam is to be recognized by China.

2. Korean Peninsula is to be transferred to the Japanese sphere of influence.

3. Chinese cession of the Pescadores Islands, and Hainan Island to France.

4. Chinese cession of Formosa to the Empire of Japan.
