Crimean War (16 Okt 1853 Jahr – 30 März 1856 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

Prior to 1852, Russia had the right to protect Christians in the Holy Land, but Napoleon III demanded that the Ottomans transfer this tight to France. The Russians attempted to reverse this decision, but French sent ships to the region to regain it for themselves. The Russian misunderstood their intent and sent troops to the Balkans, destroying an Ottoman fleet and starting the war.

As this was a part of the larger Eastern Question [the problem of European territory controlled by the Ottomans] the British were worried about the Russians expanding into the declining Ottoman Empire. They chose to join the French and the Turks in an alliance against Russia.

After a series of Russian defeats and setbacks, the Allies landed in Crimea and were easily able to push back the Russians. They also laid siege to Sevastopol. Other captures were attempted and the Russians attempted to halt the siege, but neither side made progress.

In Early 1855 the Russians faced more troubles, with the death of Tsar Nicholas I, Cossack rebellions in the Ukraine and the entrance of Sardinia of the Allied side. In September, Sevastopol finally fell, but both sides, tired of war, made peace in 1856.

The Treaty of Paris [1856] saw the territorial gains during the war revoked to their original owners and neutralized the Black Sea to reduce Russian influence. Following their efforts in the Crimean War, the United States of the Ionian Islands were granted Self Rule in 1857
