First Schleswig War (24 März 1848 Jahr – 8 Mai 1852 Jahr)

In 1848 the Duchy of Schleswig was a part of Denmark and the king of Denmark ruled the duchies of Holstein and Saxe-Lauenburg, all of which were within the German Confederation.

Both German and Danish nationalists had aim for the future of the region which conflicted with each other. Danish nationalists believed that Schleswig, but not Holstein, should be a part of Denmark due its large Danish population. German nationalists believed that Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg should remain united.

In 1848, the Schleswig-Holsteiners demanded that the king of Denmark recognize the joint state of Schleswig-Holstein and their admittance to the German Confederation. The King refused and almost immediately the Schleswig-Holstein revolted.

However, despite support from Prussia, the Danish were able to hold down the rebellion; additionally, growing fears over Prussian influence in the German Confederation led to the continued Danish rule over the region.
