After the Hawaii crisis, a strongly anti British attitude developed in the United States, additionally the United Kingdom developed a strong defensive position in regards to their imperial possessions. Tensions were at an all time high and Venezuela hoped to capitalize on them.

Venezuela had a long standing border dispute with the United Kingdom over where exactly the western border of the Colony of Guyana was. In 1895, the Venezuelans demanded the dispute be settled, and in May, the border was reduced to the original Schomburgk line.

However, the Venezuelans occupied all lands west of the Essequibo river, sparking the Anglo-Venezuelan War. The United States threatened war in December of that year and following the refusal of the United Kingdom to retreat from the disputed territory, declared war on the British Empire. However, their continued war against Spain heavily lessened their ability to fight the United Kingdom.

After a year of war, the Venezuelans made peace with the United Kingdom, ending the war for all. The Treaty of London [1897] was signed, in it the United Kingdom's extreme claims into Venezuela were recognized by Venezuela. In exchange for the land, the United Kingdom would forgive and erase all Venezuelan debts owed to the crown.
