Amidst the chaos of the total collapse of Cantegeszan imperial authority, many cities suddenly found themselves independent and were forced to fend for themselves against the onslaught of undead. Woefully unprepared, many cities were either quickly overrun, or slowly succumbed to starvation and disease.

The cities that did survive would morph into city-states and petty kingdoms. Among the southern regions of the Navrak this was known as the Vaamgaarder period, which was dominated by frequent conflict and warfare as independent city-states and emerging feudal families competed over scarce resources and limited farmland.

Vaamgaarder translates from Nimizay: 'many-cities'.
