Location: Afghanistan
After the United States had eliminated two competitors in the region, the Taliban and Saddam Hussein, Iran saw an opportunity to establish itself in the area and weaken the American force. After 9/11, Iran was cooperative with the United States and secretly helped American officials against the Taliban, but after George W. Bush’s speech on the Axis of Evil (which was North Korea, Iraq, and Iran), Iran became less cooperative. “States like these, and their terrorist allies, constitute an axis of evil, arming to threaten the peace of the world. By seeking weapons of mass destruction, these regimes pose a grave and growing danger. They could provide these arms to terrorists, giving them the means to match their hatred. They could attack our allies or attempt to blackmail the United States. In any of these cases, the price of indifference would be catastrophic.”
Support: Iran and Russia would initiate proxy wars in Afghanistan against the United States, funded by Dubai, the UAE, and Bahrain. Pakistan was in favour of strengthening the ties between Iran and the Taliban and sent economic aid.
