Haiti was declared a republic, marking a major transition in the trade. Furthermore, the period also saw the British parliament outlawing the transatlantic slave trade. The United States also passes legislation banning slave trade and they were to become effective from 1808. In 1810, Great Britain negotiated an agreement with the Portuguese calling for the abolition of the trade. A major event occurred in 1815, whereby the British pressured other countries such as France, Portugal, Spain, and the Netherlands to abolish the trade. However, Portugal and Spain were allowed to practice the trade for a few more years until they had a stable labor force
