Stalemate of 1916 (15 Aug 1916 Jahr – 25 März 1917 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

As Russian troops fatigued and generals began to recognize defeat, a new battleline was drawn up to allow Russia to defend itself through till the end.

In the North, the Russians would have to hold the Western Dvina and most specifically the town of Riga. This defense was only possible due to German forces concentrating in the South near Galicia in preparation for an offensive in 1917.

Poland was recognized as lost far before this point and so Russian command instead decided to focus on holding Ruthenia and what little mountain passes they still held in Austria.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
German Generals would not tell you of a stalemate of '16. For them, this was merely a period of moving troops and preparing for a mass attack to push the Russians out of Ukraine. Several battles were held to secure Riga and were lost, but German command held that those were merely distractions to hold down Russian forces across a broader front so as to allow for the 1917 push. But this push would never come, as German and Russian troops essentially held the deadlock, as the German high command did not see the need to waste the manpower on a grand offensive to kill what was obviously already a dying foe.
