Founded in 1607, Jamestown, Virginia, became the first permanent English settlement in North America. Although Indigenous peoples had lived on the land for millennia, Jamestown became a starting point for English expansion. The colony laid the foundation for the development of the 13 British colonies and eventually the establishment of racial slavery in 1619.
