Panfilo de Narváez was a Spanish explorer and sailed from Spain on June 17, 1527, with five ships and ca. 600 people with Florida as its goal. On the way to Cuba, ships were lost, and a few people died due to a hurricane. Narváez stayed in Cuba until February 1528 and continued sailing with five ships and 400 followers, until they reached Florida in April 1528. After the land was declared as Spain’s property, an overland expedition started in May with 300 men. Their journey was difficult and met with multiple obstacles, a major one being repetitive fights with Indians. Only four men survived, one of them being Esteban de Dorantes.
