Ragamuffin War (20 Sept 1835 Jahr – 1 März 1843 Jahr)

Beschreibung:

Starting in 1835, the Ragamuffin War was a Republican uprising in Southern Brazil that evolved into a revolution.

Initially facing overwhelming success, the rebels were able to capture the capital city of Rio Grande do Sul, though their control was large throughout the state. Eventually what started as a rebellion to end tariffs and balance the exchange rate of produce began to take on a separatist revolution. Leading to the Declaration of the Riograndense Republic on September 11 1836. [Often called the Piratini Republic to avoid confusion with the later Rio Grande Republic in Central America]

After their initial success, the rebels were able to hold off the Brazillians [who were fighting other rebellions in the country] while obtaining diplomatic recognition from Uruguay and Argentina. In 1840 they also gained recognition from the Great Powers of Great Britain and France in exchange for free use of port cities.

An additional rebel force, led by the Sardinian Giuseppe Garibaldi, were able to take the city of Laguna in Santa Catarina. [Many in Piratini mark this as the recognition of their nation by Sardinia] The people of the city greatly supported the Republican cause and aided in the siege, which ended on July 22 1839. The proclaimed Juliana Republic was proclaimed and immediately united with Piratini in a confederation. This was the bloodiest conflict of the war prior to the entry of the French and many commanding officers [including Garibaldi] died.

Still having interests in the Guyana region, France offered to support the republic economically and militarily in exchange for the Piratini Confederation becoming a French protectorate in 1842 and after a few short years of war between France and Piratini against Brazil, the Treaty of Montevideo was signed.

It's primary clauses included recognition of the Riograndense and Juliana Republics as well as their confederation. Recognition of the Piratini Confederation as a French protectorate. Additionally the zone of the Guyana Shield was to become demilitarized and placed under French administration until 1863. Though the return of this region never occured.
