Montgomery Bus Boycott (5 Dez 1955 Jahr – 20 Dez 1956 Jahr)
Beschreibung:
After Rosa Parks' arrest, the WPC (Women's Political Council), MIA (Montgomery Improvement Association) and NAACP called for a bus boycott in Montgomery. Initially it was only intended to be a one-day boycott, but due to its success, it was extended and ended up lasting over a year. In 1956, after the case of Browder v. Gayle, it was ruled that segregation on buses also violated the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. Many consider this to be an extension of what was already declared in Brown v. Board of Education, namely that public segregation was generally unconstitutional. This also marked the beginning of Martin Luther King Jr. being regarded as a core figure in the civil rights movements, as he was the leader of the MIA and therefore an important influencer of the boycott.
